Minor leagues ban some maple bats (AP)

Many maple bats will be banned in the minor leagues this season, part of Major League Baseball’s push to stop shattered shards of wood from flying dangerously through the air. New regulations will prohibit bats made from ultra-light maple. The low-density wood often is found in bats with big barrels and thin handles, creating a whip-like action when swung.

Slimmer Soto plans to rebound for Cubs (AP)

Geovany Soto saw the 242 on the scale and was neither surprised nor upset. “Not really,” he said. “I’ve seen worse.” It wasn’t until the Chicago Cubs catcher looked in the mirror that he hated what he saw: a guy who failed his colleagues, his team, his fan base and himself.

Koufax to be Dodgers’ guest instructor (AP)

Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers — especially the left-handers — are about to get the instruction of a lifetime. Hall of Fame lefty Sandy Koufax will make an appearance at the Dodgers’ spring training this week as a guest instructor. Koufax has made few public appearances since his retirement in 1966, but the instructor role will cap a very public week for him.
