La Russa stands behind McGwire (AP)

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa believes Mark McGwire would have been a premier home run hitter in the 1990s with or without the steroids. La Russa said in an interview with the Associated Press on Tuesday night that the key to McGwire's success, even when breaking Roger Maris' home run record in 1998, was improved mechanics in his swing and not a drug-fueled power boost.

McGwire admits using steroids in 1998 (AP)

Tom Davis, R-Va., presides over the final meeting of the Zero Tolerance Roundtable on steroid use by young people and professional athletes, in Washington. Mark McGwire's admission that he used steroids came as no surprise to the man who brought the slugger before Congress. In a telephone interview Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, with The Associated Press, Davis said he met for three hours with McGwire behind closed doors the day before a hearing in which McGwire repeatedly testified that he would not "talk about the past" when lawmakers asked him about performance-enhancing drugs. During that private session, according to Davis, McGwire made clear he had used steroids and wanted to say so but was worried he would face legal trouble by admitting it then.

Ending more than a decade of denials and evasion, former major league slugger Mark McGwire admitted Monday that steroids and human growth hormone helped make him a home run king. "The toughest thing is my wife, my parents, close friends have had no idea that I hid it from them all this time," McGwire told The Associated Press in an emotional, 20-minute interview.
