Mariners sign reserve INF Woodward (AP)

Reserve infielder Chris Woodward and the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik (zur-REN-cik) said Wednesday that Woodward "was a role model and mentor as well as a contributor on the field" for Seattle last year.

Blyleven, Alomar fall just short in Hall vote (AP)

Bert Blyleven is starting to believe. In his 13th year on the Hall of Fame ballot, the Dutch pitcher with the neatly groomed beard and big-breaking curveball came within five votes of election to Cooperstown on Wednesday. Five votes! That's close enough to make a man rant. But for Blyleven, the latest results represent progress.

Twins sign RHP Condrey, release Keppel (AP)

Right-handed reliever Clay Condrey and the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday agreed to terms on a one-year contract. The Twins also released righty reliever Bobby Keppel. The 34-year-old Condrey became a free agent in December, when the Philadelphia Phillies declined to offer him a contract for 2010. He went 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 42 innings last year for the NL champions.

Braves reach agreement with Hinske (AP)

A person familiar with the negotiations says Eric Hinske and the Atlanta Braves have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract. The person spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal is not final, pending a physical examination. The 32-year-old Hinske is expected to play behind newly signed first baseman Troy Glaus and third baseman Chipper Jones.

Capps, Nats finalize 1-year, $3.5M deal (AP)

Capps has reached a preliminary agreement on a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the Washington Nationals on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009.  His agent, Paul Kinzer, said the deal is subject to a physical that will take place in the first week of January.

Reliever Matt Capps and the Washington Nationals have finalized their $3.5 million, one-year contract. The 26-year-old right-hander became a free agent last month when the Pittsburgh Pirates declined to offer a contract for 2010. He was 4-8 with a 5.80 ERA and 27 saves in 32 chances last season, striking out 46 in 54 1-3 innings.
