Indians hire Nunnally as hitting coach (AP)

The Cleveland Indians have hired Jon Nunnally as their hitting coach. Nunnally spent last season as hitting coach for Triple-A Columbus. He has been with Cleveland's organization for three years since retiring as a player in 2006. The 38-year-old played in the majors from 1995-2000 with Kansas City, Cincinnati, Boston and the New York Mets.

Twins designate P Bonser for assignment (AP)

The Minnesota Twins have designated right-hander Boof Bonser for assignment to make room on the roster for starting pitcher Carl Pavano. A free agent, Pavano accepted Minnesota's offer of salary arbitration Monday night, keeping him with the Twins for next season. The right-hander went 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA in 12 starts for the AL Central champions after coming over in an August trade from…

Figgins, M’s finalize $36M, 4-year deal (AP)

Chone Figgins is moving to the Seattle Mariners — and perhaps a new position. The former Los Angeles Angels sparkplug finalized his $36 million, four-year contract with Seattle on Tuesday, a deal that includes a vesting option for 2014 that could make it worth $45 million over five years. Figgins, however, might not necessarily replace free-agent slugger Adrian Beltre at third base.

Gammons leaving ESPN for MLB Network (AP)

Peter Gammons is leaving ESPN after 20 years to become an analyst for MLB Network. Gammons will offer commentary for breaking news and big events such as the postseason, winter meetings, amateur draft and the trade deadline. He will appear on the network's news shows as well as develop short documentary-style pieces.

Church cut to make room for RHP Soriano (AP)

The Atlanta Braves' surplus of late-inning relievers forced the team to part ways with outfielder Ryan Church on Tuesday. Church was designated for assignment by the Braves to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Rafael Soriano, who made a surprise decision a day earlier to accept salary arbitration.

Big Unit still deciding whether to pitch (AP)

Randy Johnson is still weighing his decision about whether to pitch again in 2010 or retire after 22 major league seasons. Agent Alan Nero, speaking from the winter meetings in Indianapolis, said he expects to know in the coming weeks whether the 46-year-old Johnson will return for another year. Teahen, ChiSox agree on $14M for 3 years (AP)

Third baseman Mark Teahen agreed Tuesday to a $14 million, three-year deal with the Chicago White Sox and avoided arbitration. Acquired from Kansas City on Nov. 6, Teahen will earn $3.75 million next year, $4.75 million in 2011 and $5.5 million in 2012. He had been eligible for free agency after the 2011 season.

La Russa thinks McGwire will do fine job (AP)

Tony La Russa is confident Mark McGwire will do fine as the Cardinals' hitting coach. Among the reasons the St. Louis manager is certain: Big Mac has already started his new job. "I think it's going to work," La Russa asserted Tuesday at the baseball winter meetings. A person familiar with the negotiations says the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks are nearing agreement on a three-team trade that would send star center fielder Curtis Granderson(notes) from Detroit to New York. The  Yankees would trade right-hander Ian Kennedy(notes) to Arizona, and lefty reliever Phil Coke(notes) and outfield prospect Austin Jackson(notes) to Detroit, the person said on condition of anonymity because the trade was not yet final. Detroit would deal pitcher Edwin Jackson(notes) to the Diamondbacks, and Arizona would send pitchers Max Scherzer(notes) and Daniel Schlereth to the Tigers.

Sabathia wins third straight Spahn Award (AP)

New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia will be presented the Warren Spahn Award at a gala Jan. 26 in Oklahoma City. Sabathia was chosen as the recipient of the award, given annually to baseball's top left-handed pitcher, after winning a tiebreaker with Wandy Rodriguez of the Houston Astros.
