Howard sets record with 13 Ks in Series (AP)

Philadelphia's Ryan Howard struck out swinging against Yankees reliever Damaso Marte in the eighth inning Wednesday night, setting a record with his 13th strikeout of the World Series. Howard, who was MVP of the Phillies' NL championship series victory over Los Angeles, passed Willie Wilson's old mark.

Matsui ties mark with 6 RBIs in WS game (AP)

Yankees designated hitter Hideki Matsui has driven in six runs in Game 6 against the Phillies to tie Bobby Richardson's record for most RBIs in a World Series game. Matsui hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, a two-run single in the third — both coming off Philadelphia starter Pedro Martinez — and a two-run double off J.A.

Padres outright Edgar Gonzalez to minors (AP)

The San Diego Padres have outrighted utilityman Edgar Gonzalez to Triple-A Portland, moving him off the 40-man roster. He is the older brother of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Edgar Gonzalez was on the disabled list from mid-July to early September after getting hit in the head with a pitch.

Cubs LHP Lilly has shoulder surgery (AP)

Chicago Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly, who's been one of the team's most consistent starters the last three seasons, had surgery on his left shoulder and no timetable has been set for his return. The Cubs said the arthroscopy and debridement procedure performed Tuesday by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles revealed no major damage to Lilly's shoulder.

Phillies CF Victorino in starting lineup (AP)

All-Star center fielder Shane Victorino was in Philadelphia's starting lineup Wednesday night for Game 6 of the World Series despite a finger injury. "His finger is fine," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said before the game. "He already went down and took some swings and picked up a ball and he's been throwing it, and he showed me that he's fine.

Girardi dissected as Yanks try for title (AP)

When Joe Girardi left the dugout every few minutes to switch relievers against the Angels, some wondered whether he was getting paid per pitching change. When he left slumping Nick Swisher in the lineup, he was criticized. When he put in a pinch runner for Alex Rodriguez, his judgment was questioned. Now, his decision to go with a three-man rotation in the World Series is hotly debated.

Dodgers’ Padilla mistakenly shot in leg (AP)

Dr. Eduardo Reguera said Padilla didn't need surgery after spending time at Managua's Metropolitan Hospital. Police spokesman Vilma Reyes said Wednesday that Padilla's pistol apparently jammed during a target shooting session late Tuesday. Padilla was trying to clear a round from the chamber when the pistol went off.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla is recovering from a bullet wound in his leg after a target shooting instructor accidentally shot him. Dr. Eduardo Reguera said Padilla, who signed with the Dodgers in August, didn't need surgery after spending time at Managua's Metropolitan Hospital.

Tigers 3B Inge has surgery on knees (AP)

Detroit Tigers All-Star third baseman Brandon Inge has undergone surgery on both knees. The team said Wednesday the procedure at the Detroit Medical Center addressed chronic patellar tendinitis that plagued Inge last season. The procedure on Tuesday involved the repair of the patellar tendon in both knees.
