Utley’s 3-run HR gives Phils early lead (AP)

Chase Utley rocketed a three-run homer and the win-or-else Philadelphia Phillies came out swinging, taking a 6-2 lead over the New York Yankees after six innings Monday night in Game 5 of the World Series. Down three games to one, the defending champion Phillies gave postseason ace Cliff Lee a comfortable cushion.

Cabrera replaced by Pena on Yanks roster (AP)

Injured center fielder Melky Cabrera was replaced by backup infielder Ramiro Pena on the New York Yankees' World Series roster Monday. Cabrera left the Yankees' 7-4 win in Game 4 on Sunday night in the middle of the sixth inning with a slightly strained left hamstring. He took an awkward swing and appeared to hurt his leg while running out a grounder.

Giants name Meulens as hitting coach (AP)

The San Francisco Giants are turning their hitting fortunes over to a guy nicknamed "Bam Bam" for his once-fierce swing. The Giants promoted Triple-A hitting coach Hensley Meulens to the major league club Monday, hiring him to replace Carney Lansford. Lansford was told last month by manager Bruce Bochy that his contract wouldn't be renewed.

Yanks’ mound meetings slow World Series (AP)

All those meetings on the mound called by catcher Jorge Posada and the New York Yankees are giving Major League Baseball pause, too. Posada and pals visited pitcher CC Sabathia eight times — in a single inning — on Sunday night, grinding Game 4 of the World Series to a standstill. Agitated Phillies fans booed each trip.

Damon helps Yanks ’steal’ Game 4 in 9th (AP)

Johnny Damon slid into second base, saw third was uncovered and swiped that, too. All on a single pitch. The Philadelphia Phillies never recovered. Damon's daring dash at Citizens Bank Park will be remembered for a long time. He scored the tiebreaking run on Alex Rodriguez's ninth-inning double off Brad Lidge, and the New York Yankees moved within a victory of their 27th World Series title…

Yankees 27 outs from 27th championship (AP)

It was all starting to slip away from the Yankees. CC Sabathia and Joba Chamberlain let the Phillies tie the game and Brad Lidge was on the mound in the top of the ninth, looking like the closer who brought his team a World Series title a year ago. He dominated pinch-hitter Hideki Matsui and struck out Derek Jeter.

Burnett to start Game 5 on short rest (AP)

The New York Yankees are chasing championship No. 27 by throwing their top pitchers on three days' rest. With a chance to clinch the crown, A.J. Burnett is scheduled to start on short rest against Philadelphia ace Cliff Lee in Game 5 of the World Series on Monday night. CC Sabathia went on three days' rest Sunday night in Game 4, and Andy Pettitte could do the same in Game 6 if the Series…

Posada irks Philly crowd with meetings (AP)

Time out! Jorge Posada pops out of his crouch, stands up in the catcher's box and raises both arms above his head. Hang on, everybody. He's going to need a minute to chat with his pitcher. And then, here it comes … BOO!! Restless fans, jeering loud enough to hear all over Philadelphia. "I don't care," Posada said.

Yankees’ Cabrera strains left hamstring (AP)

Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera left Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday night with a slightly strained left hamstring. Brett Gardner took over in center in the sixth inning, with New York leading the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2. The Yankees went on to a 7-4 victory to take a 3-1 lead in the Series.

A-Rod’s hit puts Yanks 1 win from title (AP)

Spectators try to catch a foul ball during Game 4 of the Major League Baseball World Series between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, in Philadelphia.

Alex Rodriguez waited all game long for this hit. Heck, he waited his whole life. Rodriguez delivered the biggest hit of his career, a go-ahead, two-out double in the ninth inning off Brad Lidge and the New York Yankees took advantage of Johnny Damon's daring dash to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 on Sunday night for a 3-1 lead in the World Series.
