Glaus on Cardinals’ postseason roster (AP)

Troy Glaus will be on the St. Louis Cardinals' roster for their first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Dodgers despite missing most of the season while rehabbing from shoulder surgery. After a two-hour workout Monday that stressed fundamentals, manager Tony La Russa said Glaus showed him enough in the last few weeks to think he could be helpful off the bench.

Tigers’ Cabrera drunk between key games (AP)

Cabrera was taken to a police station over the weekend after getting into a fight with his wife at their suburban Detroit home when he came home drunk, authorities said Monday. Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson said Rosangel Cabrera called 911 at 6 a.m. Saturday, requesting police assistance. An alcohol test found that Miguel Cabrera was at three times the legal limit for driving, police said.

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was drunk — three times above Michigan's legal limit for driving, according to police — between two key games over the weekend as his team was trying to win the American League Central title. The 26-year-old Venezuelan first baseman was taken to a police station Saturday after arriving at his suburban Detroit home at 5 a.m.

Tigers, Twins set for 1-game playoff (AP)

The Minnesota Twins seem to think that 162 regular-season games aren't enough. The Twins will host the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday in a tiebreaker for the American League Central title and a trip the playoffs. It is the second straight season that the Twins have needed a 163rd game to finish the season, a first in league history.

Nationals’ Strasburg makes pro debut (AP)

Stephen Strasburg didn't put a lot of expectations on himself for his first time out as a professional pitcher. He just wanted to get out there and throw again. "It's something I love to do," the 21-year-old said Monday after making his first outing for the Washington Nationals in an Instructional League game against Detroit.

Rockies’ De La Rosa to test tight groin (AP)

Just like they did in 2007, the Colorado Rockies open the playoffs in Philadelphia as the hottest team in the National League. Only this time, they might be without the hottest pitcher in baseball. Lefty Jorge De La Rosa, who went 16-3 after losing his first six decisions, will test his tight left groin in a bullpen session Tuesday in Philadelphia in an experiment that will go a long way toward…

Mets SS Reyes to have knee surgery (AP)

From left are New York Mets' Luis Alicea, Sandy Alomar Sr., Razor Shines and Sandy Alomar Jr.(notes)  The New York Mets have shuffled their coaching staff after the team slumped to a fourth-place finish in the NL East this season. The Mets announced Monday, oct. 5, 2009,  that first base coach Luis Alicea will not be back next season and bench coach Sandy Alomar Sr. will be offered another position in the organization. Third base coach Razor Shines and catching instructor Sandy Alomar Jr. will remain with the staff but will have different roles.

After a miserable season full of baserunning blunders and fielding miscues, the New York Mets made several changes to their coaching staff Monday. Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon also announced the club will alter its training practices for treating and preventing injuries, and the team's payroll for 2010 should be similar to this year.

Carpenter, Hill win comeback awards (AP)

Chris Carpenter has been voted NL comeback player of the year and Aaron Hill has won the AL award. Limited to four starts over the prior two seasons because of elbow surgery and a shoulder injury, Carpenter was 17-4 with a league-leading 2.24 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals. The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner, Carpenter won 11 consecutive decisions from early July to early September.

Before Albert Pujols and Manny Ramirez start their postseason round of home run derby, rookie Rick Porcello and Scott Baker will make their pitches for the playoffs. The Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins sent the AL Central race to yet another one-game tiebreaker, winning Sunday on the final day of the regular season.
